#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. On July 17, on Lama lake – the pearl of the Putorana Plateau – the X-WATERS Plateau Putorana Open Water World Championship will be held for the first time.
Among the participants in the swim there are athletes from Moscow, the Moscow region, St. Petersburg, Samara, Nizhny Novgorod, as well as Norilsk and Taimyr.
The day before, a general gathering of swimmers was held at the Norilsk Development Agency (NDA) where they were given starter kits and instructed. There are 17 daredevils in total.
Competitions will be held at four distances: swimmers will have to overcome 50 and 100 meters without wetsuits, and 1000 and 1852 meters – in overalls. Athletes will be able to swim a nautical mile (the longest of the distances) if the temperature on the surface of the water warms up to six degrees. So far, it is only about two degrees.
Yury Engelhardt, Fedor Truhin, Olga Surkova, Anton Zaitsev, Elena Turchina, Sergey Arefiev, Dmitry Mogilev, Ivan Gordeichuk, Veronika Ksenafontova and Maxim Mironov will represent the Northern territory. They started preparing for the championship about three weeks ago, and before that they had qualified.
According to the organizers, the cold camp is located at the recreation center Lama-2.
“Today the most active phase of the training process begins for the X-WATERS participants. The camp program includes lectures on cold swimming, training in breathing techniques and test dives in cold (and ice-cold) water under the supervision of a doctor. The first dive is scheduled for this evening. The participants of the competition are also accompanied by employees of the city administration for civil defense and emergency situations, instructors, as well as a four-time record holder for survival in extreme cold, Russian record holder in winter swimming Osman Delibash”, the NDA employees said.
We add that X-WATERS Plateau Putorana is being implemented with the participation of the Norilsk Development Agency and with the support of Nornickel. Yevgeny Drozdovsky, Nikolay Kartaev and Alexander Bazanov, the ideological inspirer of the Open Water Swimming World Championship, organized the swim.
