#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The Russian Geographical Society plans to create a new movement The Arctic Volunteer in 2023. It will bring together experts and volunteers involved in the Arctic’s eco-cleaning. The movement meaning is to create a community of interested and competent people.
According to Sergey Korlyhanov, the Russian Geographical Society deputy executive director, Hatanga was chosen for the pilot project.
“The task is to clear Hatanga itself and the territories near it. This year we are inviting 60 volunteers and 50 scientists to participate, and we will clean up 60 square kilometers: we will start this year, we will continue next year”, the speaker told TASS at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
The trip will take place from 1 to 15 August. Applications will be accepted until June 25th. The selection is conducted on a competitive basis – preference is given to activists from 18 to 35 years old with experience in organizing a volunteer movement, as well as specialists in biochemistry, ecology, geobotany, zoology, soil science and related disciplines.
Before leaving, volunteers will be remotely trained in methods of scientific research in the field of pollution analysis and the development of methods for their elimination and practical environmental cleanup of the Arctic.
It is planned that the project will be financed from the Krasnoyarsk region treasury, the Russian Geographical Society’s and its partners’ own funds. In addition, the project was supported by the Presidential Grants Fund. The investments volume for four years is estimated at five billion rubles.
Earlier, Norilsk and Dudinka took part in the Arctic litter pick 2023, more and more foreigners are joining the Clean Arctic project.
