#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. More than 500 activists from the northern territories, including Norilsk, Kayerkan and Dudinka, took part in the Unified Arctic litter pick 2023. For comparison, last year 300 people came out to clean up. The second environmental campaign results were discussed at the Arctic Development Project Office.
Volunteers tidied up their favorite vacation spots and collected almost 600 bags of garbage, among which were unexpected finds: a gun was pulled from a stream in Vorkuta, a bottle of champagne was found in Murmansk, and a plush hippopotamus was found in Zapolyarny.
In Kayerkan, the litter pick was held under heavy rain with strong winds.
“In addition to the weather, the work was complicated by the terrain. It’s a sticky swamp where the soil pulls you in and wets your shoes. But people, wet and cold, walked through the swamps for every candy wrapper, plastic bag and other rubbish”, said Aleksey Feh, a participant in the action in Kayerkan.
In Norilsk, the teams of the educational center White Bear, Taimyr Reserves directorate and the Polar State University’s Polytechnic College named after Fedorovsky cleaned up the Zapolyarnik stadium.
It was the first litter pick of this season. The team will hold several more in the summer.
