Musk ox from Taimyr loves hugging

The zoo employees shared how the rescued baby feels.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. A month ago, employees of the Krasnoyarsk park of flora and fauna Royev Ruchey met a flight from Hatanga, on board of which there was a female musk ox, orphaned at birth and rescued in Taimyr. She was two weeks old at the time.

The baby, who was named Alana, grew up and got stronger during the quarantine, zoologists reported on their page on social networks.

The female musk ox completely lacked maternal immunity, so veterinarians monitored the animal around the clock and conducted an examination.

Alana was selected a suitable milk formula and feeding regimen: in a month she put on almost twice her weight.

Now the animal feels very comfortable. In the enclosure she has toys – a large plastic ball with which she plays football, as well as a scratching board, on which she can rub her sides, and on occasion – she can butt.

Like all children, Alana loves hugging.

And so that she would not be bored, the zoo staff picked up a girlfriend for the little one – a one-year-old Cameroonian goat named Pepa, with whom they became friends and spend time together.

“We put silicone tubes on Pepa’s horns, in case she decides to butt heads – goats love it. But, fortunately, everything worked out… Looking at the goat, little by little Alana began to taste hay, fresh birch twigs, and concentrate. But still, the main diet is still milk formula”, the details were told in Royev Ruchey.

Recall that the calf was rescued by employees of a diamond mining company Almazy Anabara JSC in the north of Taimyr – a small female clung to her recently deceased mother’s body. While the documents were being prepared for her moving to Krasnoyarsk, the baby lived with the men, then she was transferred to Hatanga, and from there to Royev Ruchey, where they have experience in nursing such animals.

Earlier, we talked about the fact that the Moscow Zoo is engaged in the rehabilitation of another animal rescued in Taimyr – the polar bear Dixon after a severe injury with the hind legs paresis. The zoologists hang fish on branches, forcing the bear to pull itself up.
