Indigenous alphabet to go digital

September 19, 2023

The language of the aboriginal people of the North is being recoded for the Internet and gadgets.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Digital devices will soon be able to display characters used in the languages of the indigenous peoples of the North. Work is currently underway to integrate the corresponding letter symbols into the Cyrillic zone of the international Unicode standard used for coding on the Internet.

The project partners are Yandex and Google, said Anna Polezhayeva, the Russia Peoples House’s director, during the Eastern Economic Forum. Integration is necessary to make it possible to use indigenous languages on the Internet, mobile devices and online translators.

Now the initial stage of work is underway, at which fonts should appear that reflect the symbols of the languages. At the moment, there are only fonts that each region developed privately for its own needs.

“This is about translating individual words and maintaining context and coherence. Now this does not exist for most languages of the Russia peoples”, added Anna Polezhayeva.

Earlier, we reported that one of the rarest languages on the planet, Enets, can now be studied online. Russia is preparing a new method for studying the languages of the indigenous peoples of the North. The Russian-Nenets alphabet will be published in Taimyr. New textbooks in rare indigenous languages will also be published soon.
