#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. A baby book in the Dolgan language A Gift for the Smallest was presented at the Taimyr House of Folk Art. The baby book is a vocabulary that is very important because it teaches the Dolgan language to both kids and their parents who do not speak it. It includes 30 most used words.
Each spread of the book is bright colorful illustrations in which the artist depicted tundra animals, dressing them in all kinds of Dolgan parkas. Thus, for young northerners, it also has an educational ethnographic value.
The dictionary author-compiler Anna Barbolina is the leading methodologist of the Taimyr House of Folk Art’s folklore and ethnography department, candidate of pedagogical sciences, co-author of the first Dolgan primer, Taimyr honorary citizen. The illustrator Vasily Batagay is the decorative, applied and fine arts department head, a Dolgan artist, an expert on the culture of his people. The designer is the Taimyr House of Folk Art’s folk art department chief artist Vladimir Berestetsky.
The process of preparing the unique publication was led by the institution director Lyubov Popova. She noted that the book is the work of a friendly creative team:
“We hope that thanks to this beautiful and smart book, there will be more children who want to learn their native Dolgan language”. In the near future, it will go to the libraries of Taimyr cultural and educational institutions.
