#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Major reindeer herds have successfully overcome all water obstacles. According to the Ecology Ministry of the region, hunting inspectors conducted patrols mainly on large rivers – Heta and Hatanga, where the main deer migration routes lie and the animals’ significant accumulations are observed.
In addition to water bodies, the ministry specialists and law enforcement officers checked the surrounding areas. Surveillance was carried out around the clock. From July 31 to August 16, operational groups checked more than 100 vehicles, more than 200 citizens for poaching, examined places where hunting and fishing products are stored.
And although most of the deer have already overcome water barriers, the territory patrolling is going on. According to the Krasnoyarsk region’s Ecology and Rational Nature Management minister Pavel Borzykh, some herds are still on their way to the wintering grounds:
“The inspectors, together with law enforcement agencies, have done a lot of work, the purpose of which is to provide safe corridors for the successful migration of deer and to exclude cases of poaching at water crossings”.
In the north of the region, for several years, together with scientific organizations, the wild reindeer number and migration routes have been monitored using satellite telemetry. Previously, a program was defined to estimate the number of the wild reindeer Taimyr population, which in recent years has been on the verge of extinction.
