#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Employees of the environmental institution Taimyr Nature Reserves reported that 2024 will pass under the auspices of the Putorana bighorn sheep. Every year the organization selects a hero of the year from among northern animals in need of protection. This year it is the Putorana snow sheep, or, as it is also called, the bighorn sheep.
A number of socio-cultural events will take place throughout the year to draw attention to the problem of the extinction of this animal species, which lives only on the Putorana plateau in the Krasnoyarsk region. Currently there are only about 1 500 individuals.
The number of Putorana bighorn sheep is influenced by climatic factors and the increase in the number of predators in the bighorn sheep’s habitat. Anthropogenic factors also have a negative impact, reports Taimyr Nature Reserves directorate.
Earlier, the we reported that the Taimyr wild deer population is on the verge of extinction.
