#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Arctic ecologists and specialists from the Research Institute of Agriculture, a branch of the Krasnoyarsk Scientific Center SB RAS, have published a study that shows that the Taimyr wild reindeer population will reach a critical level in the next one to two years and will not be able to recover on its own unless measures are taken.
“The calculations we performed gave a critical number for the Taimyr population of 88,77 thousand individuals. In accordance with the analysis of historical data projected for the near future, this year the number of these animals will be 107,07 thousand, and in 2025 – only 70,11 thousand. Even if the population does not completely disappear, it will lose its commercial status, since it will not be able to make up for losses”, said one of the study co-authors, head of the ecology and reindeer husbandry group Anatoly Shapkin.
According to experts, an urgent ban on hunting these animals for a period of three years and a ban on the free sale of meat and other reindeer products will help preserve the northern artiodactyls.
The Norilsk environmental organization Taimyr Nature Reserves’ employees have also repeatedly raised this problem.
Earlier, This Is Taimyr reported that reindeer in Taimyr had changed their migration routes.
