#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. An expedition of the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) in the waters of the Krestovskiye islands in the Yenisey gulf found the Tbilisi cargo ship that sank there in 1943. The vessel was discovered at a depth of 12.7 meters using sonar.
The search was carried out on a boat, which was launched from the ship Hansuta Yaptune. The expedition members examined an area of 500 by 700 meters.
“Tbilisi lies from west to east, the upper superstructures are destroyed, the hull protrudes from the muddy bottom by five meters. Visibility is very poor, less than half a meter. Underwater there is complete darkness due to suspended matter, even at shallow depths. The water is quite warm, nine degrees, fresh. We made video recordings of the ship parts illuminated by powerful lights from a distance of 10–30 centimeters. The exact coordinates of the Tbilisi location were entered. In a very short time, we completed all the tasks”, said the head of the Norilsk local branch of the Russian Geographical Society, Maxim Mironov, who led the expedition.
“This is a very important event for the Krasnoyarsk region and Russia as a whole, it allows us to complement the historical memory of the events of the Great Patriotic War and the Soviet people heroism”, said Igor Spiridenko, chairman of the Krasnoyarsk regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society.
To explore the ship in detail, a longer expedition will be needed.
Previously, scientists found carnivorous mushrooms from the time of dinosaurs in amber from Taimyr. Four research ships are being built for the Arctic.
