#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. In the coming months, the State Duma is planning to discuss the effectiveness of a number of environmental measures with the participation of the Russian government’s members. Initiators and implementers of such projects are the Krasnoyarsk region, Norilsk, and the Nornickel company.
To prepare for the upcoming discussion, Vladimir Burmatov came to our city to assess the dynamic situation in the territory: he was in Norilsk two years ago.
“Today we’ve toured those facilities that were in the initial stages of construction or reconstruction. First of all, I’m talking about the Sulfur Program”, clarified Vladimir Burmatov. “A very significant step has been taken towards the goals outlined by Nornickel. Of course, all that did not come without difficulties, which is primarily due to the geopolitical situation in the country, economic sanctions and dishonest behavior of Western counterparties. Contrary to this, the dynamics of the Sulfur Program are very successful implementation. It was possible to replace almost all imported components, localization and import substitution were greatly increased. Technological solutions are largely domestic – we also appreciate this. The program should be launched and reached its design capacity”.
According to him, the technology that Nornickel uses in the Sulfur Program is unique – no company in the country uses similar technological solutions: sulfuric acid is just sold. As for Nornickel, it also provides for the neutralization of technical sulfuric acid with natural limestone to produce gypsum.
“The Sulfur Program is unprecedented from two points of view: the technological process and the funds spent on the implementation of this environmental project”, the State Duma deputy explained. “According to our rough estimates, this is no less than 300 billion rubles plus five billion per year in operating expenses – a huge amount. I don’t know of a single enterprise in the country that would invest so much in the environment”, Vladimir Burmatov summed up.
Earlier, This Is Taimyr reported that the Nornickel’s Sulfur Program’s first line’s efficiency was 99.6 percent; by the end of 2024, Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant is faced with the task of launching comprehensive testing of the second and third technological lines.
