#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Nikolay Utkin, the first vice president and head of government relations at Nornickel, and Alexander Osipov, the governor of the region, signed an agreement to establish an international student campus in the Transbaikal region. They were joined by Andrey Omelchuk, deputy minister of science and higher education of the Russian Federation.
Nornickel is one of five industrial partners for this future educational center. Together, they plan to invest over three billion rubles to create the campus by 2028. A significant portion of the funding for construction is expected to come from government sources, according to the press service of the mining and metallurgical company.
“The partnership between the campus and industrial partners will create new opportunities for the development of the Transbaikal region. It’s particularly remarkable that even in the planning stages, representatives from the real economy are ready to commit financially. This collaboration will ensure additional support for the project and speed up the construction and equipping of the campus with modern technologies and infrastructure”, said Andrey Omelchuk.
Governor Alexander Osipov emphasized two key areas for the future educational center: humanitarian studies and mining. The main specializations of the campus will include mining, transport and logistics systems, medicine, and humanitarian technologies.
The campus will feature an academic building with a technopark, an IT park, coworking spaces, a congress and exhibition center, dormitories and a hotel, a sports complex, and an administrative building. The planned student enrollment is set at five thousand.
“The development of the main specializations for the future campus has been closely coordinated with experts from Bystra (Bystrinsky mining and processing plant) and regional leaders. Students from our BYSTRA Generation of program have also been actively involved in this process”, noted Nikolay Utkin. “For Nornickel, educational projects in mining, mineral enrichment, digital geotechnology, and mining machinery are particularly important. We believe the campus will help create a talent pool for Bystra. Establishing a world-class campus in Chita will create a modern center of competence, particularly in the extractive sector”.
In November 2024, the establishment of the campus in Chita was included in the national project Personnel. As an industrial partner of the educational center in Transbaikalia, Nornickel continues to invest in higher education.
The company is actively collaborating with Siberian Federal University and Zapolyarny State University named after Fedorovsky (PSU).
After renovation finishing, PSU will become one of the most modern educational institutions in the Russian Arctic, enhancing both its educational programs and infrastructure.
