On August 1, Rosprirodnadzor launches the project Master of the Arctic. Together with scientists, experts want to study the population of polar bears – to determine their habitats and interaction both with each other and with other species.
The head of Rosprirodnadzor, Svetlana Radionova, noted that her department is engaged in the preservation of the Red Book animals, which include the polar bear.
“There is a lot of scientific work to be done. This animal needs to be studied, we must understand where, how, in what conditions the polar bear now lives, and on the basis of the information received, carry out adequate surveillance measures, formulate initiatives and government measures to preserve the population”, Svetlana Radionova said at a press conference dedicated to the implementation of the Master of the Arctic project.
The specialists will fly over 10 000 kilometers on the La-8 amphibious aircraft, equipped with special devices. The research will be carried out using photo and infrared technology.
As the This is Taimyr previously wrote, scientists fear that polar bears may disappear due to climate warming by the end of the century.
