#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. In Norilsk, at the Nadezhda metallurgical plant (NMP), they plan to launch the second stage of the Nornickel company’s large-scale environmental Sulfur Program. According to Stanislav Seleznev, the company’s vice president for ecology and industrial safety, the operating experience of the first line, which was launched in the fall of 2023, showed that its efficiency corresponds to the declared indicators, this is confirmed by the Rosprirodnadzor federal environmental organization.
“We plan to launch the second line at the same plant in the fall of 2024, taking into account the first line’s operating experience”, Stanislav Seleznev told TASS.
The implementation of the program at NMP will reduce emissions in 2024 by 45 percent from the base level of 2015.
The Copper plant modernization as part of the Sulfur Program requires redesign due to limitations associated with equipment manufacturers. To solve the problem with emissions in Norilsk, the enterprise will need to be reconstructed, and Nornickel specialists are now looking for suitable technological solutions.
Let us recall that in February 2024, the company announced an update to its environmental strategy – this was done due to the economic burden, which had grown in many respects.
“Based on this, we decided to divide the environmental strategy into two blocks – mandatory and voluntary”, noted Stanislav Seleznev.
The mandatory part includes measures aimed at reducing the number of emergency situations, reducing emissions and reducing harmful impacts on the environment. In total, it includes more than 150 specific measures with costs up to 2031 in the amount of 500 billion rubles.
The voluntary part includes such areas as waste in terms of increasing the share of recycling, soil, some international initiatives and standards, as well as climate change. The voluntary part includes 187 activities; a number of goals will be clarified in 2024–2025.
Let us remind you that resources and specialists from all over the world were involved in the implementation of the Sulfur Program. The Sulfur Program will make the company’s products greener.
