#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. This week, the Taimyr research club presented a new excursion that will tell about Norilsk medicine, hospitals, legendary doctors and much more related to the medical topic.
The new excursion History of Medicine of Norilsk was developed by Oksana Chesnova, a former physician, and now an economist and passionate local historian. The new educational journey became possible thanks to the project of the Taimyr research club – School of Local Lore, which for the sixth time got support from the Presidential Grants Fund. And before that, the Nornickel company and its charity grant program World of New Opportunities helped the project develop.
The bus tour will allow participants to visit different locations, including the Old Town, Oganer and, of course, the hospital campus.
“The topic of medicine is close to me. I am a former doctor, I worked in a city clinic and at an ambulance station. My son also devoted himself to medicine. I prepared for the excursion long and carefully. It took six months. I managed to find a lot of information about hospitals, clinics, and the doctors who worked in them. Thanks to the collected data, Norilsk residents and guests of the city will learn how healthcare has changed in the territory, and will understand that we can be proud of our doctors. A large research work has been carried out. In some ways, there was enough information, but questions still remained, there were also blind spots, such as in the situation with the Talnah hospital, the Gornyak sanatorium and the first chief physician of the infectious diseases hospital, Zelma Yugengerd”, says Oksana Chesnova.
The guide explains that she now has an additional incentive to study the topic of medicine in the North. Since a lot of developments on survival and maintaining health in the conditions of the Far North have appeared beyond the Arctic Circle. Our guide was supported in her work on the excursion by her husband, with whom they traveled along the route of the future educational journey.
The excursion to the origins of medicine will begin from the Zero Point and further along the hospital route to the modern hospital campus. The test trip revealed many interesting facts about Norilsk medicine, as well as about famous doctors, including Varvara Shalayeva, Elizaveta Urvantseva – the Norilsk pioneer-geologist Nikolay Urvantsev’s wife, Victor Kuznetsov, Evdokia Zhdanova, Evgeniy Klimov and many other doctors who came to their profession by vocation and remained in it for many years.
“I would like the excursion participants to get a desire to study the history of their region, the history of Norilsk after my excursion. We have much to be proud of”, added Oksana Chesnova.
It is worth adding that thanks to another new excursion, Norilsk residents and guests of the city will be able to visit the backstage of the theater. We also reported that our site’s Russian-speaking version – the Severny Gorod news portal is among the eight best regional media outlets in the country.
