#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The historical expedition Russian Arctic: In the Footsteps of Great Expeditions will visit the Taimyr peninsula, Yakutia, and Magadan in March and April. This trip has several objectives, including the creation of an online portal that will provide information about each stop along the journey.
“The Arctic, with its harsh climate and unique ecosystem, has long been a source of inspiration and mystery for explorers. These lands have served as a stage for brave pioneers seeking to uncover its secrets. In 2025, a unique expedition will take place to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Northern Sea Route and honor the memory of great explorers”, say the organizers.
The Russian Arctic expedition aims to popularize the discoveries of polar explorers while preserving the history of Arctic exploration. This includes installing memorial signs at historically significant sites, creating an online portal with information about each location (complete with QR codes on informational plaques for easy access to historical materials), collecting data on the region’s climate, ecosystem, and geology, gathering stories about battles against fascists in the Arctic during World War II, and producing content about the history of Northern Sea Route exploration. The organizers emphasize that this expedition will not only pay tribute to great explorers but also provide opportunities for new discoveries in one of the most enigmatic corners of our planet.
During the expedition, memorial signs will be installed at key locations, including the meeting points of Hariton Laptev and Semen Chelyuskin (expedition of 1739–1743), the Papanin’s headquarters (trial wintering, 1937) – marking the beginning of active scientific research in the Arctic, the wooden lighthouse of Fyodor Minin (expedition of 1737–1740) – one of the first navigational landmarks in the Arctic, and other significant sites, including the Rybak point of Norillag forced labor camp (1949–1952) as a symbol of the complex history of Northern exploration.
The expedition is organized by the Pro Puteshestviya expedition center, led by Russian polar explorer Bogdan Bulychev, who has been studying and promoting Arctic and northern regions over ten years.
In addition, in 2024, the Pro Puteshestviya team launched the Russia 360 project with support from the president of the Russian Federation. As part of this expedition, the team became the first in history to traverse all of Russia along its land borders in a circular route, setting three national records and three world records.
