#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Another panel has appeared in the ARcTica street art gallery. The Norilsk Development Agency (NDA) has completed the Roman Mosaic course under the supervision of muralist Pavel Yudin. Since last fall, the northerners have been creating their mosaic panels, which are now presented on the facade of the building at the intersection of Pushkin, 12, and Kirov, 10 streets.
The new Roman mosaic is also the work of students at the Academy of Creative Industries. Participants in two NDA projects created a composition that is a continuation of the monumental panel on Kirov street, 38. The technique, in any case, is the same – Roman mosaic, and the main characters are with a northern character.
After The Arctic Sun – an artistic panel made of smalt – colored opaque glass – rose in Norilsk last year, NDA specialists decided to continue this direction and invited Norilsk residents to new master classes, said Karina Andreyeva, head of sociocultural and educational projects at NDA.
“More than a hundred people came to make mosaics. Seeing such enthusiasm, we decided to conduct a six-month training course with lectures and practical exercises. Not everyone managed to complete the course. Making a mosaic is serious work, and a large mosaic is a real challenge for a person, including a physical ability”, explained Karina Andreyeva.
Muralist Pavel Yudin said that the project required a lot of effort: three weeks were spent on master classes, and another two – on installation. During the classes, Norilsk residents did two works: a copy of the Roman-Byzantine, classical mosaic and independent work on the flora and fauna of Taimyr. The result was 42 modules made of small smalt cubes, from which Pavel Yudin assembled this artistic statement.
“The concept was that the Norilsk residents themselves make a work and leave it to the city, and this work becomes part of the Norilsk appearance. If a person moves to the mainland, his ‘trace’ lives on and makes the townspeople happy”, Pavel Yudin shared his plan.
For the project, 200 kilograms of smalt of different colors had to be brought to Norilsk. The location for the new panel was not chosen by chance – here the work organically fits into the surrounding space. The panel in its current form is an unfinished art object: the house where the mosaic is located continues to be faced with a ventilated cover. When it is finished, the Roman mosaic will be in a backlit niche.
Earlier, This Is Taimyr told about the panels on Komsomolskaya street.
