#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. For the first time, specialists from the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring excluded Norilsk from the list of cities with a very high air pollution index (API). These are 2023 analytics. According to the document, the API in the northern city is now classified as high.
Pollution is considered low if the API is less than 5, it’s high if the API is from 5 to 6, high – if the API is from 7 to 13, and very high – if the API is equal to or greater than 14, TASS reports.
In Norilsk, the API in 2023 was equal to seven. Compared to 2022, emissions from stationary sources and sulfur dioxide emissions decreased by 140 thousand tons, or 8 percent.
Together with Norilsk, 13 more cities were excluded from the list with very high levels of pollution; now 33 cities remain on it, including Krasnoyarsk.
Let us recall that in the fall of 2023, the Nornickel company in Norilsk launched the first phase of the large-scale environmental Sulfur Program at the Nadezhda metallurgical plant. Over six months, the enterprise disposed of more than 48 thousand tons of sulfur dioxide, produced about 74 thousand tons of sulfuric acid and about 112 thousand tons of gypsum. The efficiency of the Sulfur Program’s first line at Nadezhda exceeded the planned indicators and reaches 99.6 percent.
