#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The Yedinstvo company, a subsidiary of Nornickel, has completed laying a canal from Novy Urengoy to Norilsk. Now, in the event of a break or damage to the main line, an automatic switchover to the backup line will occur.
The main Internet communication channel to the Norilsk industrial region was installed in 2017. The total length, including the reserve, was two thousand kilometers. The channel’s capacity is 200 gigabits per second, which provides a technical basis for the development of the Russian Arctic, reports the Nornickel’s press service.
Most of the Internet channel passes through the tundra, in harsh climatic conditions, far from populated areas and roads. Depending on the terrain, the cable was laid between power line supports and supports built to suspend the cable, or by putting it in the ground. The trench for the cable was prepared with a special cutter, which has almost no impact on the environment.
A special feature of the project was the construction of an underwater section of the communication line running along the bottom of the Yenisey river. The length of this section was eight kilometers, including the reserve channel. It was possible to lay the cable near the coastline using horizontal directional drilling with access to the river bed at a distance of 500–700 meters from the shore. The channel part was excavated by an underwater excavator operated by divers.
Previously, more than 35 million rubles were allocated from the regional budget to improve the mobile Internet services quality in populated areas of the Arctic zone. We also reported that This Is Taimyr’s Russian-speaking version – the Severny Gorod news portal – is among the eight best regional media in the country.
