#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The Norilsk Museum invites photographers Kristina Shkileva and Kristina Sergeyeva from St. Petersburg to a presentation based on the art group NIZINA’s zine laboratory results. The authors will present a publication in zine format dedicated to the mythologized Norilsk in conceptual photography.
Residents explored Norilsk, its outskirts and production areas for two weeks. They reflected their views in a photograph, which will become the main illustration for the future zine. The photographs will be supplemented by artifacts found during the art expedition, as well as archival materials and written sources from the collections of the Norilsk Museum.
“Among people who have never been to the Arctic, cities like Norilsk are associated with permafrost, lack of light, depressive landscapes and dark history. We went on a photo expedition to find another Norilsk – to discover magical realism in its naturalness and ruins and, through romanticization, to form the folklore of its present or even future”, PolArt residents Kristina Shkileva and Kristina Sergeyeva reveal the artistic concept of the research.
In the author’s publication, the artists reflect on what the surviving ruins of a bygone era hold and how they coexist with the present. How is the aura formed and the space itself mythologized? What is hidden in the magical realism of Norilsk?
The presentation will take place today, September 20, at the main site of the Norilsk Museum. The event takes place within the framework of the project POLART. AR(t)-reality, which is implemented by the Norilsk Museum – the winner of the grant competition for social projects Main Resource of the Our Norilsk endowment fund.
