#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. This year, the winter activity festival got grant support as a result of the social project competition of Nornickel’s World of New Opportunities charity program. More than 30 owners of snowmobiles and snowbikes demonstrated mastery of self-propelled equipment on the lower road leading to Krasnye Kamni (eng.: Red Rocks).
The tracks and camp were located 200 meters from the VS-8 ventilation shaft. The place is familiar and well-trodden for many local tourists.
“The length of the route for utility and mountain snowmobiles is 17.8 kilometers, 300 meters more than in previous years. This lengthening of the route is due to the fact that there are more turns on the route. This was done so that the participants could demonstrate their ability to control a snowmobile at high speeds. If the guys maneuvered poorly or pressed the accelerator too hard, they flew off the track. A separate track with turns, counterslopes and jumps was built for snowbikers. They had to ride 12 kilometers (15 laps of 800 meters each)”, said Alexey Yakovlev, a representative of the Norilsk snowboard federation.
Self-propelled equipment owners had to not only demonstrate their mastery of driving it, but also test their endurance: not only to keep a snowmobile or snowbike on a turn and not fly into a snowdrift at speed, but also to maintain the dynamics of movement over the entire distance. All this puts a noticeable load on all muscle groups and forces you to maintain concentration for a long time.
The main criterion for evaluating race participants is the time and speed of completion of the route. The participants were evaluated by the organizing committee, which included representatives of the Norilsk snowboard federation and tour operators Lama Tour and Putorana Territory.
“Mistakes made contributed to the increase in time. If a rider leaves the track, he will need at least ten minutes to dig out his snowmobile and return to the route”, explained Alexey Yakovlev.
Based on the competition results, three prizes were determined, as well as the winner of a consolation prize and fourth place.
During the competition, a lottery was held, and everyone could try their luck and win a certificate to a car shop in the amount of 10 to 15 thousand rubles. The prize fund amounted to 800 thousand rubles.
Guests of the event also had a good time. The camp organized an entertainment program with competitions, music and a DJ-lighter; there was also a snow tubing slide and warm tents with hot tea, non-alcoholic mulled wine and aromatic buckwheat porridge with stewed meat.
Everyone could attend free excursions to Krasnye Kamni, which were carried out on snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles, and listen to lectures on avalanche safety and the use of radio communications.
Earlier, we reported that traditional Reindeer Herder Days were held in Taimyr for the 65th time.
