#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. In August, the educational project about the Russian Arctic was launched in Taimyr – the winner of the Presidential Grants Fund competition. Its goal is to increase schoolchildren’s interest in the history of the Arctic and Taimyr development using the example of studying the materials of the Great Northern Expedition led by Vitus Bering. Ildar Mamatov, a famous traveler, author of the Bering Expeditions project, member of the Russian Geographical Society told this.
As part of the project, educational meetings were held between representatives of the Northern Fleet of the Russian Navy and students in Dikson and Dudinka.
“The voyage on the ship Vice-Admiral Kulakov is part of a large multi-year program in which many organizations of our country are participating. If we are talking about Taimyr, here the education department of the Taimyr Dolgano-Nenets municipal district, the club of friends of the Northern Fleet take an active part. It was the sailors of the Northern Fleet who provided the opportunity for schoolchildren from Moscow, Norilsk and Dudinka to go from Dikson to Dudinka. During this trip, the children learned about the service, and also got immersed in history”, the Taimyr press service quotes the traveler as saying.
Ildar Mamatov noted that Taimyr is closely connected with the Second Kamchatka Expedition, because the discoverers explored this region of Russia, which was unknown at that time, measured depths and distances.
“There is a lot of talk about patriotic education now, so these are not just words “love the Motherland”, but specific actions that are being implemented in Taimyr, including through the education system. Children study different areas, such as ethnography, geography, history, geology. Then they prepare reports, messages, scientific papers. Tourism also plays a fairly large part in this project. It is the children who create routes through populated areas. Taimyr is, of course, a large territory, there are not many cities and settlements here – these are Dudinka, Hatanga, Dikson, Karaul. And the children of these settlements get immersed in history and popularize knowledge in the future”, the traveler explained.
Recall that 40 years of research on the Taimyr coast is now available online.
