#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The number of tourists traveling to the Russian North and Arctic regions grew by seven percent in 2024 compared to 2023, reaching a total of three million people.

“The number of domestic tourist trips in Russia is steadily rising, including in the Russian North and Arctic regions. In 2024 alone, three million people visited these areas – an increase of seven percent from 2023. This includes both Russian citizens and international visitors”, said Dmitry Chernyshenko, deputy prime minister of Russia, as reported by TASS.

According to the Center for Strategic Developments, among the northern regions, Vologda region and Karelia were the most popular, attracting around 700 000 trips. In the Arctic regions, Murmansk region led with nearly 500 000 trips. Chukotka saw the most significant growth, with its tourist numbers more than doubling. There was also notable growth in Krasnoyarsk region (up 16.1 percent), and Yakutia (up 10.6 percent).

The number of foreign tourists in these regions nearly doubled, exceeding 75 000. The largest share of international visitors was in Murmansk region, accounting for 7.7 percent. Unlike Russian tourists, international travelers are equally active in visiting the Arctic and Northern regions during both the winter and summer seasons, noted Chernyshenko’s office.

Russian minister of economic development Maxim Reshetnikov emphasized that the continued growth of tourist traffic to the northern and Arctic regions is directly linked to the development of modern tourist infrastructure.

“In the past two years, over 570 million rubles have been allocated to Arctic zone regions as part of the national project Tourism and Hospitality to create new facilities. Additionally, major hotel complexes with a total of about 1 100 rooms are being constructed with this support”, Reshetnikov explained.

Earlier, This Is Taimyr reported that tour operators are seeing a growing demand among Russians for travel to Arctic regions, but this demand is not being fully met due to a lack of available options.
