#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The second joint winter field school of the Polar and Moscow State Universities will cover the territory from Talnah to Dudinka. This time, the organizers decided to involve young participants in scientific research in the field of geocryology and glaciology.
The joint team to work within the school project from January 28 to February 4, will include:
8 students of the Geography Faculty of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov;
8 students of the construction department of PSU named after N.M. Fedorovsky;
4 students of the PSU’s polytechnic college.
The Moscow team will be led by MSU lecturer Valery Grebenets. Norilsk research group – by Pavel Kotov, director of the research center for construction technologies and monitoring of buildings and structures of the Polar State University.
During a week and a half, the school participants will have to conduct snow surveys in the built-up areas of Norilsk and Dudinka, assess the nature of snow accumulation in natural landscapes and its impact on the permafrost soils temperature.
The school will start on January 28 with a geotechnical excursion around Norilsk: the participants will also begin to study the features of snow redistribution in the city’s intra-block zones. The next day, the research will continue, but already on the territory of the Taimyr capital. Snow surveys are scheduled for January 30 at natural sites (Oganer, the area of tourist centers, the Otdelnaya mountain).
In addition to field research, the participants will also have a lecture program. Thus, on January 31, an open lecture by Valery Grebents – The Main Causes of Deformations of Buildings and Structures in the Cryolithozone will be held in the polytechnic college.
Field work will continue on February 1 – now snow surveys will be conducted at natural sites (Alykel, Yamnaya river, Kosaya river).
