#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. An expedition aboard the research vessel Akademik Mstislav Keldysh has set off for the Arctic to study the radiation state of the polar region. Specialists from the Kurchatov Institute National Center, the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, the Russian Emergencies Ministry, and the Russian Geographical Society’s Underwater Research Center will take part in the work.
According to the RGS press service, the researchers will measure radiation levels using spectrometric systems, and take samples of seawater and soil in areas where hazardous objects are flooded. First of all, the research will be conducted near Novaya Zemlya.
Scientists will also work in the Stepovoy, Blagopoluchiya, and Techeniy bays and in previously unexplored areas of the Novaya Zemlya depression. Plans also include an examination of a poorly studied object in the Barents sea.
The RGS Underwater Research Center has been conducting uniquely complex work at depth since 2015. Research of underwater objects and artifacts allows detecting sunken ships, developing and testing diving and deep-sea equipment.
Recall that the results of forty years of the Taimyr coast research are now available online.
