#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The Russian Geographical Society continues to actively expand its geographic presence in the region. New local branches of the Krasnoyarsk region division of the Russian Geographical Society have appeared in Igarka and Achinsk, the Krasnoyarsk region government’s portal reports.
“Let us recall that in 2023, two new branches of the Russian Geographical Society appeared – Zheleznogorsk and Evenkia ones. And in 2022 – in Yeniseisk and Hatanga. Now we already have 12 local branches: Kansk, Minusinsk, Norilsk, Taimyr, Turuhansk, Yenisey, Hatanga, Zheleznogorsk, Evenki, Zelenogorsk, Achinsk and Igarka. The work will continue”, the RGS’s Krasnoyarsk region branch chairman Igor Spiridenko said.
It should be noted that the Krasnoyarsk regional branch is one of the oldest in Russia, it was opened on February 10 (January 28, old style), 1901 as the Krasnoyarsk sub-branch of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society. Over the long history of its work, the RGS’s regional branch has made a significant contribution to the development of the region. Thanks to Krasnoyarsk geographers’ efforts, it was possible to preserve the unique natural complex Stolby, thanks to which Krasnoyarsk is known throughout the world today. Nowadays, the regional branch continues glorious traditions. In 2018, for the first time in history, the branch received the RGS award in the key nomination – Expedition Across Russia – for the project Tyurikov’s Board: Return. In 2020, the Cape Chelyuskin project, implemented during the XXIX World Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, won the Crystal Compass national award. And in 2022, the Krasnoyarsk regional branch of the RGS got a large silver medal of the Russian Geographical Society. In 2023, he was awarded first place in Russia in the rating of regional branches of the Russian Geographical Society.
