#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The Russian Geographical Society (RGS) said that already in August, travelers will be able to get to the islands of Franz Josef Land. True, we are not yet talking about any mass tourism to one of the most inaccessible places on the planet.
The legendary Altay resort Manzherok hosted an off-site meeting of the RGS media club, whose representatives announced 19 large-scale excursion projects, including unusual Arctic tours. In the first group there will be no more than five tourists at the same time.
“This route specificity is that it is both an educational journey and a scientific expedition”, Rossiyskaya Gazeta quotes Natalia Belyakova, director of the RGS department of expedition activities and tourism development.
Scientists, experts and volunteers will conduct research, such as studying the archipelago seismotectonics, and tourists will help them with biomonitoring along the route. Special training, as noted, is not required for this. We are talking about watching Atlantic walruses, ringed seals, whales, white whales, and with great luck – even a sea unicorn, or narwhal, which is also called the Russian Arctic’s symbol.
Another route, as RGS representatives noted, could become more popular. It is called ‘The Lost World of Anabar: from deer to taimen’. The place is considered the last remaining white spot on the planet. The Anabar plateau is located to the east of the famous Putorana plateau, it is picturesque and little studied. Reindeer migration routes pass here: in spring they go to the Arctic ocean coast, and at the end of summer they return to Yakutia. Therefore, tourists in mid-August have a unique opportunity to see this grandiose march, to taste the local Arctic cuisine from wild northern fish, in particular from taimen, which is caught in the Siberian rivers’ mouths.
Travelers will be able to immerse themselves in the world of the Taimyr indigenous peoples’ life and authentic culture. In addition, Hatanga, this tour’s base camp, from next year will be the only place from where tourists from Russia will be able to make tours to the North Pole. However, they won’t be cheap.
