Russia unveils postage stamps featuring reindeer

March 03, 2025

To mark the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, new stamps have been released showcasing animals and birds that played vital roles during the war, saving soldiers and serving as substitutes for machinery.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. One of the stamp series is dedicated to reindeer. During the war, in the harsh conditions of the North, they effectively replaced mechanized transport. Reindeer were used to carry ammunition, food, firewood, and fuel, evacuate the wounded, and search for downed aircraft.

“Reindeer are resilient, even in the toughest weather conditions. They could navigate areas where no machinery could go, traversing snow depths of several meters. During the war in the Arctic, reindeer herders evacuated over ten thousand wounded and sick soldiers from the front lines, transported nearly eight thousand military personnel for combat missions, delivered 17 thousand tons of ammunition and military supplies, and helped evacuate 162 downed aircraft from the tundra”, states the release’s annotation, as reported by the Telegram channel Our Taimyr.

The series also features stamps depicting a mine detection dog on railway tracks against the backdrop of a devastated city, a cat with a caught rat in front of the Hermitage, and a pair of camels pulling soldiers in front of Berlin in 1945.
