#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. In Taimyr, two unique sites have been designated as reserved areas: the Popigai geological site and the Pestrye rocks.
These natural heritage sites were formed as a result of a meteorite impact tens of millions of years ago. A relevant document, signed by the governor of the Krasnoyarsk region, Mikhail Kotyukov, has been published on the regional government’s official website.
The Popigai geological site is renowned for the Popigai crater, which was created approximately 35.7 million years ago by the impact of a massive asteroid. The crater has a diameter of about 100 kilometers and provides valuable opportunities to study the effects of asteroid impacts.
The Pestrye rocks represent a significant geological formation, with part of the slope consisting of impactites. The boundaries of these areas will be incorporated into land and urban planning projects.
Additionally, the remains of a steppe saiga were previously discovered along the shores of Taimyr.
