Polar Transport Branch celebrates 85th anniversary (6+)

September 14, 2022

A ships parade, a concert, competitions, a unique equipment exhibition and the first Russian VR simulator for gantry crane operators await the guests.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. This year, the Dudinka sea port and Nornickel’s Polar Transport Branch, are celebrating their 85th anniversary.

November 3, 1937 is considered the Dudinka seaport founding day. On that day, the port was singled out as an independent unit as part of the Norilsk combine transport department’s Dudinka commodity expedition.

From September 13, all residents and guests of Dudinka can visit the exhibition in the Taimyr Local Lore Museum – Dudinka Sea Port – 85 Years: Way to Success.

“Archival photographs and documents tell the port’s history, and exhibits from our time – the port equipment samples overalls and models – allows everyone to see what the Taimyr’s logistics heart now lives and breathes. A Kirovets portal crane operator’s real chair gives the opportunity to feel like a port worker. And the ships’ mock-ups – the pioneer Spartak, the modern Avraamy Zavenyagin and Norilsk Nickel – clearly show how the Arctic fleet has changed over 85 years”, the PTB press service said.

On Friday, September 16, a solemn rewarding of port workers will be held. And on Saturday, September 17, the main holiday will take place.

The port equipment exhibition will begin on the helipad. Everyone will be able to see the Liebherr LHM-250 mobile port crane on pneumatic wheels up close – usually the “Dudinka giraffes” are only visible in the distance, in the closed port area.

The exhibition will show modern loaders and reloaders, excavators and other port machines. Cabins of most of them will be available for visiting, and drivers will tell about the equipment’s work and features.

The festival guests will have a unique opportunity to try themselves as a gantry crane operator using the first SenSey VR simulator in Russia to learn how to operate a crane.

“It is an exact copy of a crane operator’s chair with controls, equipped with VR glasses and a system unit with a special software and hardware complex. Putting on VR glasses, the user is immersed in the situation of work from the cabin of the portal crane, sees the given conditions and mode of operation in front of him. The simulator makes it possible to work out the skill of controlling various types of load-handling devices in different weather conditions and after the celebration will be used for training and testing employees”, the organizers said.

Children will be able to participate in the competition on scooters and test their accuracy in the dart range. Adults will compete in arm wrestling and kettlebell lifting. The winners and distinguished participants will be awarded certificates to the household appliances store, medals, diplomas and unique sports merchandise – a T-shirt, cap or hoodie with the anniversary symbols.

In the port’s water area, visitors will be able to see the ships parade. All morning the Polar Transport Branch port fleet’s five ships with raised flags will stand behind the dam from the side of the Yenisey. Then the vessels will raise anchors and proceed towards the sea berths.

The bunkering tanker Vladimir Matveyev will take part in the parade, designed for bunkering sea and river vessels with liquid fuel with a vapor flash point above 60 degrees and motor oils, as well as collecting oil products in case of a localized spill; Polyarny, Putorany and Portovy tugboats, which ensure the approach of vessels to the berths all year round; and the pilot boat LK-15, which is used for work in the water area for the delivery of documents and people to the roadstead and back.

The second part of the celebration will take place on the Dudinka central square. The festive day will end with spectacular fireworks over the port water area.

Earlier, Taimyr celebrated the Marine and River Fleet Workers Day and Dudinka’s 355th anniversary.
