Polar bear studied nuclear icebreaker near Novaya Zemlya

The curious Red Book predator stood up on its hind legs and sniffed the air.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. In the area of cape Zhelaniya near Severny island of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, the nuclear-powered icebreaker Ural met a curious polar bear. A unique video and photo was taken by the third assistant to the captain Yana Rozhina, Atomflot said.

While the icebreaker was waiting for the Polar King vessel approach, the polar Red Book explorer was carefully examining the Ural. In order to better see what the bipeds were doing on the icebreaker, the owner of the Arctic stood up on his hind legs and sniffed the air.

Judging by the abundance of tangled footprints in the snow, the beast walked around the ship for a time. Perhaps he was attracted by the delicious smells from the cabmuz, like his brother, who was shot by the captain of the Vaigach nuclear icebreaker in November 2022 near Sibiryakov island.

Polar explorers note that even if there is a lot of bear food in the ocean, the largest land predators on Earth wouldn’t mind eating sailors’ lunch, but feeding them is strictly prohibited.

Dikson, a polar bear previously rescued in the north of the Krasnoyarsk region, with paralyzed hind legs, hunted live fish for the first time in his pool as part of his rehabilitation at the Moscow Zoo.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, the area of ice in the Arctic has decreased by more than 30 percent in recent years, and this could lead to a two-thirds reduction in the polar bear population in the near future. We also told how polar bears are learning to survive in a warming climate.
