Pedestrian gallery at Copper plant transformed

September 03, 2024

The passage from the bus stop to the administrative and amenity building of the enterprise has been transformed into an art object with a special mood.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The painting of the pedestrian gallery of the Copper plant is based on the work of Anastasia Skripnikova, a teacher at the Norilsk children’s school of arts.

The birth of the new painting space is taking place on the tenth anniversary of the art competition Add Color to the City. This competition, popular among beginners and experienced artists, is organized by the social policy department of the Nornickel company and supported by the corporate projects department of the company’s Polar Division and the team Let’s Paint Everything.

Over the past ten years, ten objects have been transformed thanks to the sketches of the Add Color to the City competition’s winners. Thus, a drawing based on the sketches of Maria Smirnova, the winner of the Add Color to the City competition, decorated the School No. 1 facade. The children’s hospital, Norilsk art school, lyceum No. 1, college of industrial technologies and services, and so on were also painted.

The anniversary competition included a series of master classes and lectures from St. Petersburg and Moscow masters. 140 Norilsk residents worked on the transformation of the interiors of the polytechnic college.

The competition theme Russia is the Land of Opportunities was liked by 89 artists from 10 to 35 years old, who sent their works. The jury included professional artists and designers, Nornickel executives and representatives of the Copper plant. The experts assessed the originality of the drawings, high-quality and creative execution. As a result, 14 participants were shortlisted for the competition and six of them became prize winners. The 18-35 years old age group’s winner, teacher of the Norilsk children’s art school named after N.P. Loy Anastasia Skripnikova was among them.

The figures of an astronaut, a rocket, a polar bear and an indigenous man were taken from the Norilsk resident’s sketch. A submarine, a metallurgical plant and city builders were placed on the walls of the 150-meter gallery.

Anastasia Dibrova, head of the events organization department of the company Raskrasim Vse (eng.: Color Everything), explained that subdued colors were chosen for the gallery so that the bright colors would not overwhelm the workers.

Artists from different cities, including St. Petersburg, worked on the gallery transformation. For almost four months, they have been working with spray paint and brushes, painstakingly applying images from the sketch to the prepared surface of the pedestrian gallery.

“Our canvas was a long corridor 150 meters long. Our task was to transform the pedestrian crossing, to make it so that while you walk along it, you want to look at it. We painted with water-based paint. The drawings combine several themes: ecology and production, professions and family, human capabilities and science, and future prospects. The sketch was created by a designer from our team, and we’ve brought it to life. It was not easy to draw, many images go onto the ceiling or fall on the joints, and all the details had to be combined so that the painting looked like a single whole. And working with water-based paint is not easy. You need to glue and draw each line. In total, more than a hundred liters of water-based paint were used for the gallery”, said Sergey Puronin, an artist from the Raskrasim Vse team, St. Petersburg.

Four artists have worked on the painting of the pedestrian gallery for a month. Some work in one half of the crossing, others in the other. Each of them has their own favorite character in the painting. Sergey likes the images of the polar bear and the northern lights, which are associated with the Arctic Circle. The drawing by the plant engineer speaks about the specifics of Norilsk. But the workers of the Copper plant are more attracted by images of family and plant themes: leaves, flowers. They take pictures against their background and thank the artists for the beauty they have given them, saying that it puts them in a good mood.

The team of artists Raskrasim Vse has plenty of work. In addition to the pedestrian gallery of the Copper  plant, they are working on the transformation of the BOKMO sports center and a school in Talnah.
