Nornickel’s digital infrastructure helps solve any problems

March 22, 2023

The company follows the latest technological developments and tests promising startups.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR“We apply all available solutions. There are internal developments. There is development from scratch of products together with other market participants – for example, on mining planning systems. There are imported systems that retain their functionality. Therefore, at home, we use the term not “import substitution”, but “sanctions independence”. This allows us to provide flexibility in solving such problems”, Sergey Malyshev, Nornickel’s senior vice president and chief financial officer said at the Nornickel live line.

He noted that today Nornickel has an advanced modern infrastructure that helps to solve problems of any complexity. Neural networks and machine learning are actively used in the work. The company deploys and fills the second data lake.

All this increases the efficiency of business processes. In particular, thanks to the introduction of electronic document management, the number of documents in the organization is reduced, the number of passage stages without loss of quality.

“In 2022, the company processed more than 300 thousand packages of documents with a total volume of more than four million sheets of paper. The acceleration of the process based on the e-document flow introduction results was about 69 percent”, Sergey Malyshev cited the figures.

Other examples are: the use of a corporate automated document management system reduced the number of cover letters and memos by four and a half times compared to 2019. The introduction of the Monitor system in conjunction with the Nornickel Academy system enabled employees to be trained and tested remotely at their workplaces. This reduces the time an employee is distracted from production activities by an average of 45 minutes.

If we talk about production, the company is closely following the latest technological developments, testing promising startups and introducing into production those that are necessary and meet the high requirements of the company. So, in industrial operation, they already use process robots, PPE (personal protective equipment) video analytics, conduct surveys using drones to fly around buildings, structures and build 3D models.

Since 2016, the project for the implementation of radio communication and positioning systems has been implemented at all Polar Division mines. As a result, a high-speed data transmission network has been created. More than 12 000 mine head lights were equipped with special devices for personnel positioning, more than 600 units of underground self-propelled equipment were equipped with mobile registration devices.

“Each employee can offer his idea, for example, through the Idea Factory corporate platform. And it will definitely be considered”, Sergey Malyshev promised.

Earlier the Nornickel Digital educational project received three international awards at once, a remote drilling system was launched at the company’s mines, a deep ground penetrating radar and unmanned vehicles are being tested. The company is also testing advanced technologies at renovation sites in Norilsk.
