#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. One of the key tasks in Nornickel’s environmental activities is the safe management of industrial waste. Enterprises regularly carry out repairs, construction and reconstruction – this leads to the generation of various wastes that require proper handling and removal to places of disposal.
To improve the industrial waste accumulation and disposal system, ecologists and production workers from the Nornickel’s Polar Division examined various methods of waste collection used in the Far North conditions. As a result, the Polar Division has launched a pilot project to install 70 large-sized mobile containers for collecting waste, specially manufactured for the company, and six specialized vehicles for moving it.
“The company’s management allocated funds for the purchase of containers and vehicles – specialized loaders. To date, the main set of equipment has arrived at the Polar Division and is now being tested. the first 36 containers have already been installed at production sites – these are mines, factories and auxiliary enterprises. They will now have a tool on how to effectively manage waste, accumulate it, regularly remove it and, thus, meet the necessary requirements for waste management”, said Stanislav Tsarenko, head of the environmental control department of the Nornickel’s industrial ecology department.
The motor transport association NPTBT has made a work plan for the technological process.
“Eight enterprises have containers with a volume of 18 to 27 cubic meters. As industrial waste accumulates, it is transported to landfills. The containers were purchased taking into account their shift, that is, there will always be a container for industrial waste at the production sites. The organization of removal and replacement of empty ones will be carried out through the dispatch services of enterprises”, said Vyacheslav Kudashkin, director of NPTBT JSC.
The containers were manufactured to special order from Nornickel in St. Petersburg: 50 pieces with a volume of 20 cubic meters, 10 pieces with a volume of 27 cubic meters and 10 pieces with a volume of 18 cubic meters. As Vyacheslav Kudashkin noted, their uniqueness is that they are completely sealed, equipped with a lifting roof that prevents water, snow, foreign objects from getting inside, and protects from the wind. A large-sized container can be installed in different places on enterprise sites, depending on their needs and tasks to be solved at a particular moment. They can accumulate up to 32 types of waste. Special vehicles for transporting containers are made in China.
The pilot project for a new scheme for the accumulation and removal of industrial waste will last until the end of the year. It includes the Mayak, Oktyabrsky and Taimyrsky mines, Nadezhdinsky metallurgical and copper plants, the Unified Warehousing Enterprise and Central Transport Enterprise.
If the operating experience is positive, the company will consider the possibility of purchasing additional containers and vehicles for the accumulation and removal of industrial waste from all enterprises of the Norilsk Division.
