#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The Nornickel’s top management presented the results of sustainable development for 2022 online to the public.
“Who needs sustainable development? The short answer is that we all need it – our employees and their families, authorities, local residents, including indigenous peoples, environmentalists, investors and non-governmental organizations. And, of course, the company itself needs this, and every year it confirms the seriousness of its intentions with impressive investments in this area”, said Vladimir Zhukov, Nornickel’s vice president for investor relations and sustainable development.
The principles of sustainable development lie at the heart of Nornickel’s strategy. The company regularly interacts with stakeholders to determine expectations and take into account public opinion on the environmental and social sustainability of the business, emphasized the Nornickel’s press service.
Among the key topics on which progress has been made this year are the industrial safety program aimed at reducing the number of accidents, the Sulfur Program in Norilsk, a comprehensive study of biodiversity in the regions of the company’s presence, new principles and key projects of the social strategy aimed at improving the quality of life of local communities and maintaining Nornickel’s reputation as one of the most attractive employers in Russia, as well as the climate scenarios needed to adapt the company to the risks of climate change.
The company interviewed 221 people, including 123 internal and 69 external stakeholders. The survey showed that interest in the topic of ecology has grown and interest in corporate governance has decreased. Ensuring industrial environmental safety, the impact of transport on water bodies, responsible geological exploration and land reclamation were added to the list of significant topics.
Earlier we wrote that Nornickel’s corporate programs in medicine and sports are among the largest in Russia. The Academy of Sciences emphasized that Nornickel’s participation in the study of biodiversity is a unique experience for Russia. In 2023, Nornickel will continue to finance key projects.
