#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Nornickel vice president for investment project management Andrey Ambartsumyan, in an interview with the Klyuch-Severny Gorod TV channel, spoke about the first results and significance of the most notable event of the year – the Sulfur Program – at the Nadezhda metallurgical plant (NMP) site.
Let us remind you that on October 25, NMP began activities for comprehensive testing of the Sulfur Program newest environmental complex first line’s equipment.
“Probably, the epoch-making event happened not on October 25 of this year, but three or three and a half years ago, when we crossed the Rubicon, crossed the no-return point and entered the active phase of project implementation at the Nadezhda metallurgical plant. It is too early to say that we have achieved all the goals of the project. We are still on our way, but now almost everything related to the equipment and service systems has already been installed. And to date we have produced several hundred tons of sulfuric acid. Accordingly, we have already been able to utilize a certain amount of sulfur dioxide. All systems work more and more stable with each subsequent iteration. After reaching design capacity, our target figure is more than 900 thousand tons of sulfur dioxide”, the speaker explained.
Andrey Ambartsumyan clarified that the project presents two main technologies – the technology for the production of sulfuric acid from sulfur dioxide and the technology for neutralizing sulfuric acid. They are not unique. But the scale is.
“I confirm that no one, probably not only in the country, I believe, in the world, has ever implemented such technologies on such a scale, under such conditions. Norilsk is a unique logistical, climatic, and geographical point on the map. We had to deal with a lot of changes that we were making. The project was designed for a significant part of the import component, but we are forced to redo it and adapt it for import substitution, thus minimizing the sanctions risks that this project has experienced to the fullest. We already understand that we are fully coping with this task”, said the Nornickel vice president.
