Nornickel employees can make steam from stone

The Who Cares program’s participants presented their projects.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. For several months, participants of the Who Cares community, divided into teams, solved problems facing the Nornickel company’s production and business activities nowadays.

The program has been implemented for the third year and gives Nornickel a real economic effect. Over four years, the program has successfully expanded its geography: having started in 2020 as a pilot project in the Kola Division, in 2021 it was replicated in Norilsk, and last year it was adapted to the Trans-Baikal Division, where it also became successful.

The Who Cares community today unites over 1500 people: if in 2022 only 170 people applied in the Polar Division, solving 20 business problems, then this year in the first season at the start of the program on the portal комуневсеравно.рф 450 employees of the company registered. The Polar Division departments’ heads formulated 25 business tasks. Since February of this year, the teams have started working on them. As a result, 24 projects were presented, covering a wide range of areas of the company’s activities: labor safety and promotion of safe behavior at work, digitalization, increasing labor productivity and efficiency, and others.

Opening the two-day program of Who Cares’ project defense, Alexander Popov, Nornickel’s senior vice president – chief operating officer, head of the Polar Division, noted that truly caring people gathered in the hall:

“Over the years of the program, 57 top managers have become business customers, 70 teams have been united, 22 projects have been implemented, about 30 are being implemented. The expected effect for the last season is about four billion rubles. But I would not put only money at the forefront, but would put development first. We live in an era of constant learning. I am sure that the implementation of such projects and change programs is both a new stability and a new reality. The program and your participation in it will give impetus to the development of the entire company”.

Denis Tsymbalov, senior manager – head of Nornickel’s Mines’ Integrated Development Project Office’s Engineering Department, is one of the business customers of this year’s program. He set the task for his teams to reduce heat transfer from the rock mass in the workings (the Skalisty mine’s Gloubokaya shaft construction), as well as to propose and justify the technology for processing high-copper ore of the S-6 deposit of the Skalisty mine. He notes that the teams certainly coped with them, proposing the idea of vortex tubes – not a new development, but previously not used in our conditions.

Another interesting and rather difficult task was set by Ilya Vorobyov, Norilskgazprom’s deputy general director for economics and finance – to consider the possibilities of forming a value chain by deepening gas processing. And his colleagues coped with it brilliantly.

“Colleagues have managed to find a solution, the effect of which can be colossal. This project will be taken into implementation: it was necessary to select a technology and confirm that it is applicable. And this step has been taken. Now it is important to make sure that it will work on a pilot industrial scale, and also to work out the financing of the project”, he noted.

Previously, the program was implemented at three different sites, but next year it is planned to make a common, united one, which will include the Polar and Kola divisions, as well as the Yenisey River Shipping company.
