Norilsk residents create paper art works

The Creative Industries Academy has presented an intensive course in subject design.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The Norilsk Development Agency (NDA), together with the British Higher School of Design – Universal University – has developed an express course on object design. At the classes, about 30 Norilsk residents learned the basics of paper plastic along with the course curator Lilia Makarova (Moscow), paper plastic designer, the Shalidesign studio founder.

Norilsk residents got acquainted with paper plastics: techniques for creating three-dimensional paper products based on the main property of the material – to remember the shape.

The northerners tried to look at paper in a new way: they say that if you learn to feel it, you get impeccable creative works. For four days, the course participants learned the object design basics, paper plastics techniques, origami, paper pattern design, figured out the main stages of layout, acquired the initial skills of quick sketch layout and volume-spatial thinking.

“I was very surprised by the Norilsk people. They turned out to be sensitive, talented, and most importantly, interested and eagerly absorbing new information. I believe that this is very important for self-development”, said Lilia Makarova.

The four-day intensive master-class result was an exhibition of conceptual lamps of various shapes, designs and purposes.

Norilsk resident Olga Izotova chose a special paper folding technique for her lamp.

“With the help of creasing and folding, I formed the waves that reminded me of our snowdrifts”, said the course participant. “I am satisfied with the work very much”.

Karina Andreyeva, the NDA’s social cultural and educational projects’ head, is sure that the city needs its own professionals in the field of product design.

“The development of a whole course on this topic at once could be premature. Therefore, we decided to start with an intensive on paper-plastic and see how much it will be in demand among creative citizens”, she shared.

The NDA plans to hold a master class on corrugated cardboard. If the Norilsk people show interest in object design, the Agency is ready to make a full-fledged course.
