Two settlements can apply for state support.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Norilsk, Dudinka and 129 other cities claim state support measures as strongholds in the Russian Arctic. Maxim Dankin, deputy director for regional development of the Information and Analytical Center of the State Commission for the Development of the Arctic, told TASS about this.

“The absolute leaders in terms of the number of functions performed were Arhangelsk, Murmansk, Nadym, Naryan-Mar, Norilsk, Noyabrsk, Novy Urengoy and Tarko-Sale. Anadyr, Vorkuta, Dudinka, Labytnangi, Turuhansk also perform many different functions. These settlements can apply for the widest range of support measures”, said Maxim Dankin.

Among the criteria were: location of medical and educational organizations, logistics infrastructure, proximity to the fields for the development of which licenses were issued, and other indicators.

“So, for example, Norilsk is at the same time a mainstay in the field of internal security, a cargo and passenger air hub, an important socio-cultural center, including the functions of providing medical care, a pivot in the field of innovative and information support for the socio-economic development of the Arctic zone, as well as a center for the mining industry”, noted Dankin.

The authors of the study concluded that Arctic cities have important functions. And the opinion that these settlements can exist on a watch basis is a delusion.

“It is important to understand that it is the cities in the Arctic that serve as centers for ensuring health and quality of life in general, for the preservation and development of culture, including the indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North. Arctic cities are irreplaceable centers for the development of specialized technologies for the development of the Arctic, test sites. Cities are very important as centers of personnel training”, Dankin noted.

As a reminder, almost 300 investment projects have been launched in the Russian Arctic.
