#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. A memorial plaque to the poet, Taimyr explorer, USSR State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company’s own correspondent for the northern regions, and the first translator of the Dolgan poetess Ogdo Aksyonova’s poems, Valery Kravets, was unveiled on the facade of house No. 1 on Shchors street in Dudinka, the official website of Dudinka reports.
“Valery Kravets has left a rich creative legacy. He glorified Taimyr, glorified the people who live and work on our harsh, but so beautiful land. He was one of the creators of the Dolgan written language, and translated almost all of the works of our wonderful poetess Ogdo Aksyonova. He is an example that shows that you can be born outside of Taimyr, but give it your heart, strength, and painstaking work. We will honor his memory and be proud of such a wonderful fellow countryman,” said the head of Dudinka, Yury Gurin.
Recall that Valery Kravets was born in 1939 in the city of Habarovsk. He graduated from the journalism department of Kyiv State University and the screenwriting department of the All-Russian State Cinematography Institute (VGIK). He began his career in 1961 on Krasnoyarsk television.
Then he worked in Norilsk for 32 years: nine years in a local television studio, 16 years as a correspondent for the USSR State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company for the northern areas of the Krasnoyarsk region, and six years as the Nornickel press center director.
In addition to numerous television works, the journalist and poet has more than 60 books to his credit: poetry collections, translations from the Dolgan language, and documentary prose.
Valery Kravets’s devotion to journalism has been recognized by the Krasnoyarsk Pens award (Krasnoyarsk Union of Journalists) and a special award named after V.A. Melnikov (The Moscow Region Union of Journalists). He was also a member of the Moscow Writers’ Union and the Russian Federation Union of Journalists.
