Melting polar ice can affect time

April 03, 2024

Scientists believe that the time adjustment will have to be made in 2029.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Scientists have found that melting glaciers can slow down the planet’s rotation speed and, as a result, can lead to a change in world time. One of the work authors, Duncan Agnew, believes that in 2029, for the first time, humanity will have to reduce, rather than increase, the length of the day – subtract, rather than add, a leap second.

A study published in the journal Nature states that melting glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica are leading to a redistribution of mass from the poles towards the planet’s equator, causing the Earth’s rotation to slow down further.

Previously, scientists warned that climate change could lead to the appearing of new islands in the Arctic. Over the past 160 years, the temperature on Earth has increased by 1.7 degrees Celsius.
