Krasnoyarsk region to fall into flood zone in 50 years

December 02, 2021

Climatologists have developed a scenario for the complete melting of sea ice in the Arctic.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. It is not known for sure whether there was a worldwide flood described in the Bible and the Mesopotamia myths. However, modern scientists are increasingly concerned about the possibility of the natural disaster coming back if the climate in the Arctic changes.

Rambler tells that climatologists used the latest climate model HadGEM3 and developed a plausible scenario for the complete melting of Arctic sea ice, which occurred 130 thousand years ago during the so-called Mikulino interglacial. Now scientists believe that the situation could repeat itself in 15 years. According to their calculations, sea ice may melt by 2035, which will entail irreversible changes in the Arctic ecosystem. The research is published in the journal Nature Climate Change.

Such global metamorphoses will affect the existence of coastal cities. Amsterdam, Basra, New Orleans, Venice, Ho Chi Minh City and Calcutta will be directly affected, according to Climate Central. All these cities by the end of the decade may get under water completely or partially. The current dams will not be able to prevent disasters. In addition, residents of even semi-flooded cities will be in constant danger due to regular floods.

Some Russian cities are also at risk. According to experts from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, permafrost could thaw three to four meters by 2100.

Since half of the territory of our country is located in the cryosphere (one of the Earth geographic shells, characterized by the presence or possibility of the existence of ice), Vorkuta, Salehard, Chita, Ulan-Ude and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky will first of all feel the consequences. Later, their fate will be shared by Yakutsk, Magadan and Igarka. Alexey Yekaykin, an employee of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, told about this in an interview with RIA Novosti.

And back in 2017, Ural scientists from the laboratory of climate physics and the environment of the Ural Federal University predicted climate change in the Arctic part of Russia in the next 50 years. The findings are published in the Znak.com article.

According to the head of the laboratory, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences Vyacheslav Zaharov, thin permafrost layers in Western Siberia will first melt, which will cause flooding of all Yamal cities, including Labytnangi, Novy Urengoy and the already mentioned Salehard.

In total, eight regions of Russia with all settlements fall into the flood zone: the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, the Arhangelsk and Murmansk regions, the republics of Komi and Yakutia, as well as the Krasnoyarsk region.

Earlier, we told that the level of the world ocean is growing at a record speed. We also reported that ice melting in the Arctic slowed down this summer. Three satellites will be launched to monitor them.
