Ice minimum registered in the Arctic

August 06, 2020

In July, the Arctic recorded the minimum ice level in the entire history of observations.

The scientific director of the hydrometeorological center of Russia Roman Vilfand informed about the absolute minimum of ice coverage. According to the scientist, in this regard, the Northern Sea Route opened a month earlier – it usually happens at the end of August or in September.

Earlier, Vilfand said that in July the average monthly air temperature in the Arctic repeated the record of July 2016. In the Canadian sector of the region, the indicator exceeded the norm by four to six degrees, and in some places it turned out to be seven degrees above normal marks. In the Russian sector of the Arctic, in some areas, the climatic norm was exceeded by five degrees.

Scientists fear that polar bears may disappear due to global ice melting.

A new temperature record was recently recorded in Spitsbergen. Climatologists have already noted that global warming in the Arctic is happening faster than elsewhere in the world. Moreover, Taimyr was called the most “warming” point. Recall that the ice drift in Dudinka this year was the earliest in the entire history of observations. It took place in mid-May.
