Hatanga celebrated its 398th birthday

September 16, 2024

The total population of the municipality is over 5,3 thousand people.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The settlement of Hatanga celebrated its 398th anniversary the day before. The settlement is located on Taimyr on the river of the same name. Translated from the Evenki language, Hatanga means ‘big water’, the press service of the Northern Territories Development Agency reported.

Hatanga was founded in 1626. This year is considered to be the date of the Hatanga annexation to Russia. The municipality currently includes the following settlements: Hatanga, Katyryk, Heta, Novaya, Kresty, Kayak, Zhdaniha, Novorybnaya, Syndassko and Popigai, and the total population is over 5,3 thousand people.

The village beyond the Arctic Circle is called the tourist gateway to the Arctic, it is surrounded by the endless expanses of the Taimyr peninsula and the Laptev sea. The nature here is unique and distinctive, and in winter in Hatanga you can see the most beautiful natural phenomenon – the northern lights, which can be observed here more often than in any other populated area in Russia.
