#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Russian traveler Fedor Konyukhov intends to go on a solo expedition to Smolensk island (Livingston) in Antarctica in December 2025 to study the problem of microplastic pollution.
“This island is about twenty kilometers long and six kilometers wide. And there’s no one there. Just a colony of penguins, sea lions, and albatrosses. We want to go there for a season, for two months”, he said.
The location for the expedition was not chosen by chance – in this way, the traveler wants to return the Russian name to the island, which is now better known as Livingston due to the wider distribution of English-language maps, TASS writes.
“We decided to set up a polar station and call it Smolenskaya”, the traveler shared.
On the island, he will conduct scientific research on the topic of Antarctica pollution with microplastics, for which the traveler received permission from the council of countries that signed the Antarctic Treaty.
Earlier, This Is Taimyr reported that Fedor Konyukhov painted pictures at the North Pole.
