#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Today, Russia is officially celebrating the Father Frost’s birthday. It is believed that it is on November 18 that the first severe frosts begin on his estate, in Veliky Ustyug.
The exact age of the winter wizard is unknown, probably over two thousand years old.
Father Frost came to us from ancient Slavic pagan legends and myths. There he appeared in the form of an old man with a long gray beard, causing crackling frosts in winter with the clatter of his staff.
It is interesting that for a long time children were frightened by the image of an old, tall, at first glance, formidable grandfather. So, in 1910, Santa Claus appeared at a Christmas party in one of the kindergartens, but the kids burst into tears with fear.
Over time, the children got used to the wizard, but on September 24, 1929, in order to combat ‘religious prejudices’, the celebration of Christmas was banned. So the citizens of the USSR for six years forgot about the tradition of decorating the Christmas tree and inviting Father Frost.
The holiday was revived in 1935, but New Year was celebrated on a grand scale instead of Christmas. Since that time Father Frost comes to children together with his granddaughter Snow Maiden (Snegurochka).
Every child knows that Father Frost fulfills any desires, one has only to write a letter. Several million messages come to his residence every year.
Today, at the Ol-Gul ski base at 18:30, young Norilsk residents can congratulate the ‘local’ Father Frost on his birthday and give him their letters.
“On his holiday, Father Frost decided to visit the Norilsk children. They will be able to give him a gift, read a poem and even give a message in which they will tell what they want to receive on New Year’s Eve”, the organizers shared.
