#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. El Niño is ending, but its effects will still affect temperatures. And last June may turn out to be one of the hottest on record, said Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center.
“El Niño ceases to exist and a transition to a neutral phase occurs. <…> The fact is that the consequences of El Niño, which began in May 2023 and lasted until April 2024, are very significant, it created an amazing effect. The temperature of both the Pacific and the Atlantic ocean in the extratropical zones was the maximum for the entire observation period”, he told RIA Novosti.
As the forecaster noted, high temperatures now persist not because of El Niño itself, but because of its consequences, which was an increase in temperatures in the temperate latitudes of the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
“In May, the temperature was as high as possible, although El Niño weakened, we’ll see how it affects us in June. There is a high probability that it will be in the top three hottest. This will have an impact for a long time”, he added.
El Niño is a regularly occurring natural phenomenon that causes an abnormal increase in surface temperature in the equatorial Pacific ocean. During the El Niño, heat from the ocean escapes into the Earth’s atmosphere. And in other periods – La Niña – heat from the atmosphere moves into the ocean.
Previously, in order to preserve the climate, scientists proposed re-freezing the Arctic ice. We also reported that This Is Taimyr’s Russian-speaking version – the news portal Severny Gorod – is among the eight best regional media in the country.
