Despite all the challenges that the company had to face in 2022, Norilsk Nickel continues to invest in the development of the regions where it operates, including the renovation of Norilsk. Spending on social programs, charity, social infrastructure last year amounted to 48.5 billion rubles. The company’s management spoke about this during the main results in the field of ESG (environmental, social, and corporate governance) presentation for a wide range of shareholders.
“In 2022, Nornickel reached record levels of investment by continuing to implement key social programs aimed at developing cities, improving working conditions and medical care for our employees, supporting culture and sports, and improving the environmental situation”, said Vladimir Potanin, Norilsk Nickel president.
In particular, the implementation of the comprehensive plan activities for the Norilsk social and economic development continues. This includes the residential buildings construction in different parts of the city, a secondary school for 1.1 thousand students and a kindergarten in Oganer, a clinic, the existing urban infrastructure repair and the Comprehensive center for the population social services. With the company participation, a new water intake is being built on the Norilskaya river.
“Despite the fact that four parties (federal authorities, the Krasnoyarsk region, the city administration and Norilsk Nickel) are participants in the comprehensive Norilsk development plan, the company’s share is more than 70 percent. This is an unprecedented example. But Norilsk Nickel is not limited to the comprehensive development plan, implementing such projects as the design of the Arctic Museum of Contemporary Art, an ice arena and a swimming pool construction. Driving through the city, you see how many long-awaited objects are being built. I am sure that when all these projects are implemented, we will have a modern, completely different Norilsk”, said mayor Dmitry Karasev about the company’s contribution to the city development.
In 2022, with the Norilsk Nickel support, technical specifications for the design and engineering surveys for the projects implementation were prepared, and design is underway for all facilities.
“It is difficult to overestimate the degree of the company’s participation in the Norilsk life. These are the Sulfur project, which is very important for our city, which will radically change the situation in the city ecology, and the Clean Norilsk program, with the help of which not only industrial sites, but also residential areas are changing for the better”, the mayor added. “Guests of Norilsk note that the city is changing. By the way, there are more and more of them due to the new Arctic tourist cluster development. We welcome over 10,000 people a year. And they go not only for the sake of nature – the company is open to industrial tourism programs and shows guests production, introduces modern technologies”.
