#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Participants in the Clean Arctic eco-project will clean cape Chelyuskin of scrap metal. This is the northernmost and most inaccessible point in Eurasia.
According to experts, there are now from 25 to 40 thousand rusty barrels on the cape, TASS writes.
“If a sailor looks closely through binoculars from the Northern Sea Route, cape Chelyuskin is orange in color – because of the rusty barrels and scrap metal that have accumulated there. Based on the results of this season, we will make a detailed orthomosaic and understand the real volume of accumulated waste. This season we will actually try out a new complex technology”, said the Clean Arctic head Andrey Nagibin.
In this case, the barrels are planned to be rolled manually, and transported over long distances by ATVs, so as not to damage the soil, which cannot be restored. The collected waste is to be delivered by helicopter to the Mikhail Somov vessel.
Before this, Mikhail Somov will deliver the necessary equipment to the cape: diesel power plants, wastewater treatment plants, a gas welding machine, construction materials, an ATV with a trailer. At the beginning of August, the first batch of volunteers will go to the cape – ten people, including an electrician, a builder, and a welder. Specialists are needed to put in order the old Roshydromet dormitory – the only permanent building on the cape, in which the rest of the expedition members will subsequently be able to live.
“This is a real special operation. Our volunteers leave for the cape a little beforehand to prepare the site, accept the cargo and begin installing the equipment. The work of assembling the necessary materials is painstaking and troublesome, because if, for example, screws are not enough, they will have to be delivered in the only way – by helicopter. So we’re getting ready thoroughly”, said Andrey Nagibin.
This year is the fourth year of the Clean Arctic implementation. In 2021–2023, project participants collected 12 thousand tons of man-made waste.
