#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. A scientific and educational laboratory for climate monitoring, the carbon testing ground, has opened in a birch grove near the campus of the Siberian Federal University. It will be one of the first one in Russia to study the flow of greenhouse gases in urban forests, said Vladimir Shishov, director of the Siberian Federal University’s Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology Institute.
“This site is truly unique in terms of studying urban forests under high anthropogenic load. Urban forests are specially protected areas, but nevertheless there are quite a lot of visitors, and understanding those processes is vital”, he told TASS.
A total of 18 pilot carbon testing grounds operate in Russia. The Krasnoyarsk one will be able to join them if industrial partners are found to co-finance the project, the scientist noted. As explained by the university management, it’s a matter of 100-150 million rubles.
Earlier we reported that Krasnoyarsk scientists developed a reactor that runs on fuel from pine needles and cones.
